About Teck

Teck is a diversified resource company headquartered in Vancouver, B.C., engaged in mining and mineral development, including steelmaking coal, copper, zinc and energy. We are committed to responsible mining and mineral development, productive community relationships, and inclusive development in the regions where we work.

Regional Benefits in the Elk Valley

The Elk Valley is one of the largest steelmaking coal mining regions in the world. Teck has been helping to build healthy, vibrant communities in the Elk Valley for many years. We are invested in the prosperity of the region, including a variety of initiatives that support environmental and social wellbeing. The Fording River Extension (FRX) Project will extend the life of Fording River Operations by several decades and will provide continuing socio-economic benefits for local communities, Indigenous nations, and the regional, B.C. and Canadian economies.

Teck’s activities in the Elk Valley contribute to local economies through tax and royalty payments, direct and indirect employment, spending on goods and services, and community investments. In 2020, the economic activity of our steel-making coal operations generated $3.7 billion through:

Employee wages and benefits ($600 million)

Payments to suppliers (over $3 billion)

Income and resource taxes ($13 million)

Community investment (nearly $1.4 million)

Taxes paid to the municipalities ($10.3 million)

Teck’s Fording River Operations employs 1,400 people, many of whom live in Elkford, Sparwood, and Fernie in B.C., and the Crowsnest Pass in Alberta. Fording River Operations represents about one-third of Teck’s entire coal business unit, which provides about 4,500 direct jobs.

Whenever possible, our sites also use local suppliers that meet our safety standards and other requirements. These procurement and business opportunities generate jobs, income, and tax revenues that support the local economy.
