The Detailed Project Description (DPD) for the Fording River Extension (FRX) Project was successfully submitted to the BC Environmental Assessment Office on July 29, 2021. This submission ends the Early Engagement Phase of the coordinated environmental assessment (EA) process and starts the EA Readiness Decision phase.

The intent of the DPD is to describe the current understanding of the Project to inform the BC Environmental Assessment Office Readiness Decision and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada Notice of Determination. The DPD builds upon the Project information that was shared in the Initial Project Description. Updates and additions have been informed by feedback received through the Early Engagement Phase of the Project and by technical studies that have been advanced to date. The DPD supports in refining Project components and options through the design process.

The assessment process is expected to take several years and will include multiple, substantial opportunities for public participation and input. Public input can be given directly to Teck at any time, including between government designated periods. You can do so by:

  • Proposed Castle Development Renamed Fording River Extension Project

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

Teck has changed the name of the proposed project to extend the life of our existing Fording River Operations to the Fording River Extension Project, or FRX. From our engagement activities, it was clear that the previous “Castle” Project name was leading to some confusion. The Fording River Extension (FRX) name will help to more clearly and accurately convey the nature of this project as an extension of the existing operation and not a new or separate operation. We have informed the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) and the BC Environmental Assessment Office (BCEAO) of this change.

FRX represents an opportunity to secure the existing social and economic benefits from the Fording River Operations long term, integrating best practices for environmental protection. As always, Teck is committed to meaningful engagement about our plans for FRX. We are working with Indigenous nations, regulators, communities of interest and the public to understand and respond to issues and interests regarding the Project.

The Castle Project is currently under review by both the BC and federal governments. As part of this review, The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada accepted Teck’s Initial Project Description on October 14, 2020, which initiates a public comment period from October 14 – November 3rd. During this period, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada is seeking public input on the proposed Castle Project.

To participate in the public comment period, please post your feedback to the IAAC website. Note that there will continue to be opportunities to provide feedback on the Project as the federal and BC assessment process advances over the next three years.

Additionally, Teck is interested in hearing your direct feedback on the Project. You can submit your comments through:

  • Teck's 2019 Economic Contributions in the Elk Valley

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

We are committed to ensuring that the benefits of mining are shared in the areas where we operate, and that our communities benefit from our work. We recently released our 2019 Economic Contributions Report detailing the economic contributions generated by Teck’s activities and operations, including those that stem from our operations in the Elk Valley.

In 2019, our activities in the Elk Valley (including Fording River, Greenhills, Line Creek, and Elkview Operations) generated $3.9 billion through employee wages and benefits ($607 million), payments to suppliers (nearly $3 billion), income and resource taxes ($292 million), and community investment (nearly $1 million). Across Canada, our economic contributions amounted to $8.9 billion.

Of this $3.9 billion, a third stemmed from Teck’s Fording River Operations. Through the Castle Project, Teck will continue to generate jobs and economic growth, securing a strong future for the community in the Elk Valley.
