The Castle Project released its first newsletter to share recent updates and Project activities. Learn about the Project, ongoing environmental studies, and Teck’s commitment to biodiversity. We are committed to ensuring that the benefits of mining are shared in the areas where we operate, and that our communities benefit from our work. We recently released our 2019 Economic Contributions Report detailing the economic contributions generated by Teck’s activities and operations, including those that stem from our operations in the Elk Valley.

In 2019, our activities in the Elk Valley (including Fording River, Greenhills, Line Creek, and Elkview Operations) generated $3.9 billion through employee wages and benefits ($607 million), payments to suppliers (nearly $3 billion), income and resource taxes ($292 million), and community investment (nearly $1 million). Across Canada, our economic contributions amounted to $8.9 billion.

Of this $3.9 billion, a third stemmed from Teck’s Fording River Operations. Through the Castle Project, Teck will continue to generate jobs and economic growth, securing a strong future for the community in the Elk Valley.

On August 19, 2020, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada announced the decision to designate the Castle Project for review under the Impact Assessment Act (2018). Based on this decision, the Castle Project will be subject to federal review that will focus on areas of federal interest. This review is in addition to the provincial environmental assessment process currently underway. The Castle Project will work with the BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) to ensure a coordinated process that avoids duplication and supports a timely and balanced review.

As the Castle Project continues through the Early Engagement phase of the provincial environmental assessment process, the BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) has posted the Summary of Engagement for the Project. This document summarizes what the EAO has heard to date from communities, Indigenous groups, and government agencies in Canada and the US. It also identifies topics of particular interest or concern, and outlines how Teck should address these topics in the development of the Detailed Project Description. The Summary of Engagement also lists the participating Indigenous groups and summarizes each group’s concerns and interests in relation to the Castle Project.

As a next step in the Early Engagement phase, Teck will respond to the input included in the Summary of Engagement and will consider the individual issues in the development of the Detailed Project Description for the Castle Project.
